“Nature is the ultimate open platform -- it is there to teach you and give you whatever else you need,” says Rue Mapp. But Mapp realized that she rarely saw other African Americans enjoying the outdoors or being active in conservation and nature groups, so they were not always reaping those rewards. A few years ago, Mapp founded Outdoor Afro, a national organization and community to reconnect African Americans with natural spaces and one another through camping, birding, skiing, hiking, and gardening.
