West Virginia State JournalStudy: Minorities, Women Often Discouraged From Entering Engineering, Science Fields
This year's Bayer Facts of Science Education survey of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) department chairs at the top 200 American research institutions found that women and minority chemists and engineers are ofte discouraged from entering their chosen profession. As the State Journal reports, "The survey showed that 40 percent of minority and female chemists and engineers polled said they were discouraged from studying STEM subjects. Forty-four percent said their college professors were the sources of the discouragement." Perhaps unsurprisingly, the majority of department heads were white males.
